Bruyns roars into IGT Tour lead at Irene

TSHWANE, 17 March 2015 – Drikus Bruyns made a great charge with a nine-under-par 63 to take a one stroke edge on the chasing pack in the second round of the IGT Tour’s GFG Academy Classic on Tuesday.

The 22-year-old Sunshine Tour regular was in imperious form at the sun-kissed Irene Country Club layout as he reeled in seven birdies and an eagle to move to 11 under par.

Bruyns from Hexvalley Golf Club in De Doorns will take a one stroke lead over 2015 Sunshine Tour Qualifying School winner Hennie du Plessis into the final round.

The IGT Tour graduate was equally impressive with an eight-birdie 66 that saw him leapfrog joint overnight leader JC Ritchie for second.

Ritchie’s second round 68 landed him a share of third with Dean O’Riley, who carded a 66.

Christiaan Bezuidenhout, who shared the first round lead, registered a 69 for a seat on the bus at eight under with Jacques Kruyswijk (67), Tyrone Ferreira (67) and Derik Ferreira (65).

Having begun the day three shots off the pace, Bruyns got off to the perfect start as he converted a three foot birdie putt at the 12th.

He boxed a 25-footer at the 15th to move to two under and made back-to-back birdies at the 17th and 18th to turn in four under. Bruyns notched three more birdies at the first, third and sixth before chipping in for an eagle three at the ninth.

The third-year professional was delighted to be at the summit after four frustrating weeks on tour.

“I hit every green in regulation today and gave myself a lot of chances,” Bruyns said.

“It felt fantastic to be out there competing again. I injured a rib just before the Dimension Data Pro-Am, and I was very disappointed to miss the cut in George. As a member of the Ernie Els and Fancourt Foundation, I played the courses at Fancourt so many of times and I expected to do well.

“The qualifiers on the Sunshine Tour is tough, because if you don’t make it, you struggle to stay in a competitive groove.

“I missed the qualifiers for the Joburg Open, Africa Open and Tshwane Open, and now we will have another four weeks off before the Zimbabwe Open. The weeks add up and that’s why it’s so great to have the IGT Tour. Although it’s a development Tour, the standard is high and we can compete and keep sharp. When you shoot a couple of low rounds like this, it feeds your confidence.”

Du Plessis was also pleased to be competing on the country’s premier development Tour where he honed his craft in preparation for the Qualifying School.

“I learned so much playing the IGT Tour and it’s interesting to come back and compete against amateurs now,” the Sesambos player said.

Du Plessis has also had a frustrating start to his rookie season. He qualified for the Dimension Data Pro-Am, Joburg Open and Tshwane Open, but missed the cut in all three tournaments.

“Coming to grips with the pro ranks is definitely a process and you have to grind it out. That’s why it’s great to come back to the IGT Tour to compete,” he said.

“It’s good for the soul to shoot a couple of solid rounds and it builds your confidence for the next stretch of Sunshine Tour events. I enjoyed competing against the pros when I was still an amateur and it’s nice to come back and play with the amateurs now. I really appreciate the experience now that I am in the pro ranks.”
