JOHANNESBURG, 7 January 2014 – Limpopo’s CJ du Plessis threw forced his way to a share of the lead with first round pacesetter Tyrone Ryan at the 36-hole mark of the IGT Tour’s first Q-School Warm Up event on Tuesday.

The 22-year-old GFC Academy golfer reeled in seven birdies, offset by two late bogeys for a second successive 67 to join Ryan at 10-under-par 134, who followed a blistering 64 at the ERPM Golf Club on Monday with a two under 70.

Coert Groenewald, who was one shot off the pace at the start of the second round, limited the gap to one shot with a 70.

But Du Plessis and Ryan are certain to come under fire from the chasing pack that include 2013 Race to Q-School winner Callum Mowat.

Eager to make the most of the two warm-up events before he starts the battle for a pro card at the Sunshine Tour’s Qualifying School at the end of January, the Gauteng amateur doubled up on 68s to vault to within two shots of the lead.

Fellow amateur Naithen Moore carded a 69 and Ted Hendriks a 68 to join Mowat in a tie for fourth on 136.

Meanwhile Lean Boezaart, who won the final Race to Q-School at Glendower, Rhys West and Ryan Clarke all pulled into contention with 69s and lurk just three shots behind.

One of the country’s top ranked amateurs in 2012, Du Plessis had no problem securing his card in the pro ranks, but had a tough time navigating the pre-qualifiers. Although Du Plessis finished the season ranked 90th and kept his card, he is keen to keep his game in top shape with three lucrative European Tour co-sanctioned events looming.

Du Plessis believes it is crucial that he finishes in the top five this week and at the final Q-School Warm-Up tournament at CRM next week.

“I never want to go back to Q-School, so I am really happy that I did enough in the end to keep my card,” said Du Plessis, who earned a cheque in six of the nine starts he secured.

“The qualifiers are back-breaking, stressful and demoralising; getting into the tournament is very tough, because everyone is shooting for a spot. I can’t afford to sit back and relax just because I’ve avoided Q-School.

“It’s crucial to get the season off to a good start because a good finish in one of the co-sanctions can make your season. That’s why I am keeping my game on form in the IGT Tour events.”
