England’s Tree takes wire-to-wire win at IGT Series Ruimsig

JOHANNESBURG, 19 February 2014 – Top English amateur Toby Tree underlined his credentials as one of the United Kingdom’s mostRuimsig17-19FebDay3 (78) promising prospects when he claimed a wire-to-wire victory in the second IGT Series title at Ruimsig Golf Club on Wednesday.

The Chichester golfer carded a final round 68 for a winning total of 13-under-par 203 and a two stroke victory over Northern Ireland’s John McClean.

The 40-year-old McClean came home in 69 strokes to edge out South African Rourke van der Spuy, who took third on 206 with a 68. American Brandon Taylor vaulted to fourth on 207 and claimed the R500 lowest round prize with a closing seven under 65.

Tree decided to play the first two IGT Series events to prepare for the Sanlam SA Amateur Championship in Hermanus. He led the IGT Series Randpark through the first two rounds, but was upstaged by top South African amateur Louis Taylor over the final 18 holes.

But the English Golf Union Elite Squad player found the form he was chasing for the South African Golf Association’s flagship event at Ruimsig.

“I tied for sixth at the SA Stroke Play and I wasn’t hitting the ball badly, but the game just felt a little disjointed,” Tree explained. “I decided to play the two IGT Series events, because I really needed to get something going if I wanted to challenge in Hermanus.”

Tree opened his account with a 66 to take the lead and stayed ahead of the chasing pack with a second round 69. His final round featured six birdies and two drops, but the 19-year-old was more than happy with the he navigated the XX layout.

The Englishman picked up birdies at the fourth and sixth and erased a three-putt bogey at the seventh with a pair of birdies at the eighth and ninth.

“I missed my first green in regulation for the tournament at the 11th and dropped another shot, but I did get on the green for two at the two par-fives, and added two more birdies to my card,” Tree said.

“I just didn’t hole anymore putts, so I will do a little more work with the putter before the SA Amateur.”

Tree was defeated in the third round of the Match Play in 2012, and also knocked out last year by the eventual champion, South Africa’s Thriston Lawrence.

“I hope to make it to the quarters or semis this year, but match play is so unpredictable,” he said. “You can be in great form, but one bad round and you’re out. The last two weeks has definitely added to my confidence. The competition was stiff, the course set-up at both events was tough and it was a great way to get into shape.

“I’m definitely going down to the Cape with a strong game.”
