JOHANNESBURG, 29 October 2015 – Drew Roelofsz came through an intense battle of attrition to claim his fourth IGT Tour title with a two stroke victory in the Race to Q-School, presented by RAW Golf School, at Killarney Country Club on Thursday.

The 23-year-old Edenvale golfer carded an even-par 70 to edge out Jason Froneman in the fourth event on four-under-par 206.

“I’ve often heard the guys describe the Race to Q-School series as a serious test of patience, and never more so for me on the back nine today,” said Roelofsz.

“I was striking the ball well, but the putts just wouldn’t drop. That’s when you have to keep your head in the game and fight the frustration; stay patient and fight for pars. I’m really pleased that I kept it together so nicely and got my fourth win in the bag.”

Roelofsz began the final round in a three-way tie for the lead with Froneman and first round leader, Terence Boardman.

Having knocked it stiff at the opening hole, he tapped in for birdie, but surrendered the shot with a bogey at four. However, a hat-trick of birdies from the fifth put some space between Roelofsz and the chasing pack and – despite three more bogeys – his lead never came under threat again.

“I hit some great irons into all three holes and the birdies were all under 12 feet,” he said.

“The final round set-up was really tough. We were off the back tips and almost all the pins were tucked away or in challenging positions. Where we were hitting 4-irons in the first two rounds, we had to use 3-irons, which is much tougher to control.

“It’s actually great to be tested like this in the build-up to Qualifying School. If you can come away with a top five finish, you know your game is solid and that feeds your confidence.

“I had two bogeys on the back nine where I couldn’t up and down out of bunkers, but overall I’m really pleased with my form and my mental strength at this point in the race.”

Roelofsz, who also won the BDGA Academy Classic, Autumn Swing Classic and Gary Player School for Champions Academy Classic, now join Michael Palmer as the only other four-time champion on the country’s premier development Tour this season.

“I’m definitely going to gun for one or two more in the last five Race to Q-School events,” he said.

“When you win like this, you arrive at Qualifying School a winner and it’s a huge mental advantage. Hopefully there is some more trophies with my name on it.”

Froneman closed with a 72 to take second on 208, finishing one shot ahead of fellow IGT Tour winner Bryn Flanagan (70), Bryce Bibby (70), Anthony Michael (71) and Boardman (73).

Reigning Sanlam SA Women’s Stroke Play champion Ivanna Samu signed off with a 75 to join England’s Toby Tree (74) in joint 15th on 215.
