Flawless Kruyswijk sparkles at Wingate

TSHWANE, 12 August 2015 – IGT Tour graduate Jacques Kruyswijk returned to form in sublime style to power to a two stroke lead in the second round of the CA Academy Classic at Wingate Park Country Club on Wednesday.

The 22-year-old Centurion golfer fired a flawless six-under-par 66 to take pole position on 10-under-par 134, eclipsing fine earlier efforts from overnight leader Coert Groenewald, TuksSport Golf Academy amateur Philip Kruse and two-time Sunshine Tour winner Danie van Tonder.

Kruyswijk graduated from the IGT Tour in 2012 and has successfully kept his card in his first two years on the Sunshine Tour.

He currently ranks 65th and has enjoyed four top 15 finishes this season, including a tie for 13th at the Zambia Sugar Open.

He claimed his sixth title on the country’s premier development Tour with a wire-to-wire victory in the Wanna Be A Champion Classic in July, but struggled to maintain that form at the Sun City Challenge when the Sunshine Tour resumed last week.

“I shot two of the worst rounds ever at the Lost City and I was really shocked, because I have been hitting the ball as good as ever in my career,” Kruyswijk said.

“My goal this week was to build a little confidence, because I want to get some positive energy flowing before we head to KwaZulu-Natal next week.”

Kruyswijk dipped into red figures as early as the par-five second and added two pairs of birdies at six, seven, 15 and 16.

“I hit a nine-iron from 180 meters into the green at the second and drained a 25-footer for eagle to give me some momentum,” he said.

“I had some good fortune around the sixth and seventh that put me in contention and made the back nine more relaxed.  I holed a lot of putts, which was really the only difference between today and last week.

“A flawless round is the perfect remedy for any lack of confidence. My goal was to limit the bogeys and I’m pleased I got the job done. I always seem to throw in a double bogey in a round or a tournament that pushes me out of contention.”

Groenewald will start the final round two shots back after signing for a 70.

Kruse from Woodhill Country Club slipped to third at five under after returning a 71, while Van Tonder, a 10-time IGT Tour winner in 2011, followed an opening 72 with a two-bogey 68 to move into fourth on four under 140.

Meanwhile Belgium amateur Michael van Hoeck will start the final round despite dropping two shots at the final hole.

Van Hoeck flew a nine-iron into the 138 meter par three 16th and watched the ball spin back and disappear down the hole. The ace negated his double bogey finish and the resulting 72 was a 10 stroke improvement on his opening 82 and good enough to make the cut, set at 10 over 154.
