TSHWANE, 27 November 2015 – Tshwane professional Jacques Kruyswijk delivered a commanding performance over the closing holes to seal a third IGT Tour victory this season in the Race to Q-School, presented by GFG Academy, at Irene Country Club on Friday.

The 22-year-old Centurion golfer staved off joint overnight leader David Ashley with an eagle-birdie combination to sign for a final round 65 and a one stroke victory on 14-under-par 202.

Ashley from England guaranteed a runner-up finish with a six under 66, while fellow GFG Academy member Russel Franz also fired a 65 to finish sole third on 11 under.

Peter Wilson from England (67), first round leader Breyten Meyer (68) and Pieter Kruger (68) shared fourth on 10 under.

Kruyswijk was thrilled to achieve an eighth career win on the country’s premier development Tour and said Ashley pushed him all the way to the winner’s circle.

“I am so pleased with this victory, but I have to credit David, because this was my toughest win yet,” Kruyswijk said.

“He played incredibly well. He kept the pressure up throughout the round and really forced me to fight for the victory. He definitely has the game to get his Sunshine Tour card at Qualifying School and I believe he could even win it.”

The overnight leaders both started par-birdie-par, but Kruyswijk handed Ashley the lead with a five at the short fourth hole.

He immediately reversed the damage with a hat-trick of birdies and drained another birdie putt at the ninth to re-join Ashley at the front on 10 under.

Kruyswijk had a one shot edge going down the back nine after a birdie at 10, but Ashley produced a birdie at 14 to reclaim a share of lead. The pair parred their way to 17 where Kruyswijk finally broke the deadlock with an eagle.

“That eagle took a little bit of the pressure off, but not much,” said Kruyswijk, who hit a magnificent seven-iron out of the rough at the par-five to five feet and holed the putt.

“I knew I had to birdie the last hole to seal the win. My tee shot landed just off the fairway, but I worked a lob-wedge to 18 feet and knock the putt in for the win.”

The victory was certainly a welcome confidence booster for Kruyswijk ahead of the Australian PGA Championship on the Gold Coast next week.

“This tournament is an opportunity to gain experience in against a world class field and it’s really good to be going to Australia with some confidence and a positive mind-set,” he said.

“I really want to make the most of this chance and finish the season on a high. So many of us started our pro journey on the IGT Tour, and it was so great to come ‘home’ this week before Australia.

“I really enjoyed playing with Breyten and I have to congratulate him on an outstanding rookie season on the Sunshine Tour. His achievement is going to inspire the next class of IGT Tour graduates who will start their rookie season next year.”
