PRETORIA (14 January 2015) – Free State amateur Burger Heckroodt put on a classy performance with a brilliant second round nine-under-par 63 in the final Q-School Prep and his flawless feat held up for a three-stroke victory when the final round of the IGT Tour event  at Centurion Country Club was washed out on Wednesday.

Heckroodt carded an opening 67 and started the second round three strokes behind the Sunshine Tour’s Ockie Strydom. He produced a clinical execution to finish day two at 14-under-par 130 and the Bloemfontein golfer was eager to carry his three stroke lead to a podium finish.

However, the IGT Tour organisers were forced to call a 36-hole result after heavy thunderstorms hit Pretoria and the deluge quickly left the course unplayable.

Heckroodt was excited to carry his current form into the Sunshine Tour’s Qualifying School next week, but disappointed not to have one more round to put the finishing touches on his preparation 90-hole examination at Bloemfontein Golf Club.

“I wouldn’t have chosen to win like this, but they always say a win is a win,” the 25-year-old said.

“Don’t get me wrong, I am really pleased with the result, but I would have liked to put my swing and putting stroke under pressure and see if it would hold up.

“It’s been a while since I led in a tournament and it would have been good to feel a bit of pressure before Q-School. But I got what I came out here to do and that was to be as prepared as possible for next week. My game feels really good and mentally I feel very calm and focussed.

“I hit all the right shots and made a lot of good decisions in the second round, which was really satisfying because the set-up was tricky and you had to keep your wits about you.

“I’ll take those positives home to Bloemfontein and apply them next week. And the bottle of champagne, to share with my parents and family when I get my card.”

Strydom finished alone in second on 133 with rounds of 64 and 69, one stroke clear of local pair, Centurion’s Herman Minnie (64-70) and Irene golfer Conway Kunneke (67-67).

Minnie and Kunneke are also heading for Bloemfontein alongside Nigel amateur NJ Arnoldi (69-69), GFG Academy player Russel Franz (71-64) and Lean Boezaart (69-66), who finished on nine under 135.

The trio tied for fifth with Sunshine Tour professionals Brandon Stone and Shaun Smith, who kept competitive for the summer with rounds of 69 and 66..
