Huyshamen gives chase at Kyalami

JOHANNESBURG, 17 November 2015 – Two weeks ago, Ruan Huyshamen decided to get out of “camping mode”, put his nose to the grindstone and started training hard.

The consequence was successive rounds of 69 at Kyalami Country Club and a chance to lay claim to his first IGT Tour victory in the Race to Q-School #7, presented by The Gary Player School for Champions.

Huyshamen reversed the damage of two early bogeys with five birdies to finish in a four-way tie for second in the first round.

On Tuesday, he offset a double bogey at the par-five fourth with five gains to finish within striking distance of fellow GFG academy player TJ Bekker and Tyron Mc Comb on Tuesday.

“It just goes to show what a little work can do,” the 23-year-old Windhoek player joked.

“On a serious note, though, I did a lot of mental work with Graeme (Francis) and I definitely turned a corner. I have been struggling a lot this year and I realised that I’d fallen into ‘camping mode’.

“You get to a point where you just accept the bad rounds or bad shots; you almost expect it. I decided that I needed to get out of that mental trap and take a more hard-ass attitude about my game; raise my expectations and demand more of myself.

“Graeme gave me a training programme with a predetermined amount of chips, putts, drills, drives, etc, that I have been sticking to religiously. All that practice left me really positive this week. I feel comfortable when I’m standing over the ball, because I know what the shot is going to do.”

Overnight leader Bekker overcame a bogey start with an eagle at the par-five fourth.

The Limpopo golfer added a pair of birdies at 12 and 13, but gave one back at the 17 to close with a two under 70 for a share of pole position at seven under.

Coming off a tie for sixth in last week’s Race to Q-School #6, Mc Comb got himself into a share of the lead with a 68, comprising of half-a-dozen birdies.

Former IGT Tour winner Pieter Kruger also returned a 68 to jump 13 spots to fourth.

Meanwhile reigning Sanlam SA Amateur champion Carrie Park joined Siphiwe Siphayi and Byron Garvie in fifth.

The GFG Academy player carded a 70, while Siphayi and Garvie registered respective rounds of 71 and 72.
