IGT Tour’s Lombard cracks Euro Tour Final Stage
11 November 2014 – Five-time IGT Tour winner Zander Lombard prevailed in a tense final round battle on Monday to qualify for the Final Stage of the European Tour’s Qualifying School in Spain next week.
Having survived the high-pressure First Stage of European Tour Qualifying School at Ribagolfe in Portugal at the end of September, Lombard prepared for the Second Stage Qualifier by competing on the country’s premier development Tour back home.
On the back of a runner-up finish in the Race to Q-School at Ruimsig Country Club, the country’s number three ranked amateur racked up two stunning eagles and five birdies for a final round 63 and a four stroke victory in the Race to Q-School series at Irene Country Club.
Back in Spain, the 19-year-old Woodhill golfer played exceptional golf in the Second Stage Qualifier at the Panoramica Golf & Sport Resort in Spain.
Lombard carded rounds of 68, 70, 70 and 67 to finish in the top 20, but then had to tangle with five other players, including compatriot Dylan Frittelli in a sudden-death play-off.
In extra time, the TuksSport Golf Academy player displayed remarkable maturity to hold his nerve under pressure to clinch his spot alongside another IGT Tour regular, former SA number one, Haydn Porteous, who carded rounds of 67, 69, 66 and 69 to tie for fifth on 17-under-par 271.
The South African pair are among 69 players from four Second Qualifying Stage tournaments that made the grade for the PGA Catalunya Resort in north-east Spain from 15-20 November.
Lombard and Porteous will line up alongside fellow South Africans and Sunshine Tour winners Oliver Bekker, Louis de Jager, Merrick Bremner, Justin Walters and reigning Investec Cup champion, Trevor Fisher Jnr.
Keith Horne, Tjaart van der Walt, Michael Hollick, Brandon Stone, Charl Coetzee, Le Roux Ferreira and Darren Lloyd were among the South Africans who were knocked out in the four qualifiers.
