KEMPTON PARK, 7 July 2015 – Reigning Battle of the Giants champion Jacques Kruyswijk is firmly in the driver’s seat through 36 holes of the IGT Tour’s Wanna Be A Champion Academy Classic at Serengeti Golf and Wildlife Estate.

The 22-year-old Centurion professional collected three pairs of birdies on his way to a sizzling six-under-par 66 to pull six strokes ahead of his nearest challenger, fellow Sunshine Tour campaigner Anthony Michael, on Tuesday.

“Looks like six was my lucky number today,” said a beaming Kruyswijk, who leads on 11 under 133.

Anthony carded a two under 70 to finish two strokes ahead of Drikus Bruyns, who returned a 72.

Desvonde Botes, a veteran of 23 years and 12-time Sunshine Tour winner, registered a second successive 71 to finish in fourth on two under 142.

Kruyswijk won the 2012 Serengeti Cup – a series of four tournaments played at the Jack Nicklaus-designed Masai Mara course – as an amateur and competed as an amateur in the South African Open at Serengeti that same year.

“I knew I had to come prepared,” the 2013 IGT Tour graduate said.

“I worked hard to prepare myself for this week and I played the course on Sunday to re-acquaint myself with these tricky greens.

“It’s the kind of layout that rewards accuracy off the tee and precision irons to the right spots on the greens. My game plan was strictly percentage golf this week and it’s paying off.”

Kruyswijk overcame a bogey start with birdie at the second and dipped into red figures with further gains at 16 and 17, three and four and eight and nine.

“I hit 16 greens in regulation in both rounds and that is the story,” he said.

“I missed two fairways in the first round and three in the second. I am hitting my driver and irons very well at the moment and I was able to give myself some chances.

“It’s dead easy to make a double or triple on this layout if you mess up off the tee or hit the wrong spot on the greens, but if you limit your mistakes, a low round is always on.”

Shane Heckler leads the Wanna Be A Champion Academy delegation by one shot from fellow amateur Kyle McClatchie.

Heckler carded rounds of 75 and 71 to join Sunshine Tour pros Tyrone Ferreira and Jandre Fullard at two over 146.

McClatchie was even-par through 14 holes, but his campaign derailed with back-to-back double bogeys at 15 and 16 and a further bogey at 18 saw the Ekurhuleni sign for a 77 and a share of 11th on three over 147.
