Kruyswijk goes wire-to-wire at Serengeti

Serengeti6-8JulDay3 (156)KEMPTON PARK, 8 July 2015 – Centurion golfer Jacques Kruyswijk closed with an even-par 72 to wrap up a wire-to-wire victory in the Wanna Be A Champion Academy Classic at Serengeti Golf and Wildlife Estate on Wednesday.

The victory was his sixth on the country’s premier development Tour and first since he edged out Werner van Niekerk for the Battle of the Giants title at Glendower in November last year.

The 22-year-old was in imperious form at the Jack Nicklaus-designed Masai Mara course en route to an impressive 11-under-par 205.

Kruyswijk opened with a five under 67 and carded 66 to pull six strokes ahead of the field.

He got off to a fast start with an eagle at the par-five third and birdied the 11th, but dropped three shots on the back nine, including a three-putt bogey at 18.

“The wind got up just after we turned and it was really blowing,” Kruyswijk said. “I hit it long at both par threes and put myself in an impossible position on 18.

“My overall game has been great this week. The putter was a little cold today, but I felt good out there. I prepared well for this week and I just felt my game was all there.”

Kruyswijk finished one stroke clear of fellow IGT Tour winner Anthony Michael, who carded a 71.

Third place went to Bryce McCabe, a 21-year-old amateur from the Gavan Levenson Academy at Glendower, who notched five birdies over the last six holes for a 67 to finish on 215.

Kruyswijk said his strategy for the tournament was percentage golf and his game-plan paid off.

“I hardly missed any few fairways and greens and that’s how I won,” he said.

“I held the lead from day one and kept it all the way through. I am really pleased that I coped under the pressure, especially in the final round. The conditions were really tough on the back nine, but I had given myself enough breathing room to pull it through.

“It was great to play with two of my friends on the Sunshine Tour, Michael and Drikus (Bruyns). I have to thank the IGT Tour for giving us the opportunity to stay sharp in these events.

“And thanks to the Wanna be a Champion Academy, who went well beyond the call of duty to allow us to use their equipment and facilities.

“I think it’s fantastic that all these academies have come on board. I cut my teeth and learned how to compete an amateur on the IGT Tour. It was fantastic to see all the young talent out there and I hope they also enjoyed the chance to play with us ‘old boys’.”

Zwartkop amateur Rikus Oosthuizen aced the fifth hole, holing out with a six-iron at the 187 meter par three.
