JOHANNESBURG, 12 January 2014 – In the last push before the Sunshine Tour Qualifying School kicks off in Bloemfontein next week, recent Race to Q-school champion Callum Mowat will lead a group of 11 amateurs at the IGT Tour’s final warm-up tournament at CMR Golf Club from Sunday.
The eleven optimistic hopefuls will be pitting themselves against the professionals one last time in the hopes of sharpening their games, increasing their focus and hunting down an injection of much-need confidence ahead of Q-School.
Mowat, who ranks eighth in the country, claimed one victory and six top five finishes in his nine starts in the 12-event IGT Race to Q-School series to win the Order of Merit. Last week, after the three week festive break, he claimed a joint runner-up finish in the first warm-up tournament at ERMP.
The 22-year-old from Modderfontein Golf Club has declared himself ready for the gruelling challenge ahead and is very clear about his participation at CMR this week.
“Another top five this week will go a long way in boosting my self-belief before the real games begin in Bloemfontein, but even a bad week won’t be a loss because it will highlight things I need to work on,” Mowat said.
“A lot of the IGT Tour regulars who are going to Q-School have already gone down to the Free State to practice, but I think you need to give yourself every possible edge going into Q-School and you can only get that in competition.”
Werner van Niekerk, another top ranked SA amateur, is also among the hopefuls at CMR and agrees with his 2013 national team playing partner.
“There are going to be 240 guys from 18 counties in Bloemfontein next week, battling it out for 30 cards.” Van Niekerk said. “I think every guy playing CMR this week who has entered for Q-School, has done so for one reason. We have all prepared well and we know we are ready, but an extra bit of effort this week can only help.”
The Sunshine Tour Qualifying School tees off at Schoeman Park and Bloemfontein Golf Clubs from 21-25 January. The leading 30 players and ties will be eligible for Category 13 membership for the 2014 season.
