JOHANNESBURG, 12 June 2015 – Honeydew amateur David McIntyre is ready to open the door to a new chapter in his young career after cruising to a maiden IGT Tour victory in the BDGA Academy Classic at Eagle Canyon Country Club on Friday.
The 18-year-old resisted any attempt by the chasing pack to catch him with a final round four-under-par 68 and cruised to a four stroke victory on 14-under-par 202.
McIntyre entered the final day two strokes clear of IGT Tour regular TJ Bekker and had a four-stroke cushion on IGT Tour winner Christiaan Bezuidenhout, while Sunshine Tour players Mark Williams and Tyron Roelofsz were also in the mix.
However McIntyre showed maturity well beyond his years and steel when it mattered most in only his third start on the country’s premier development Tour.
He made a sensational start with back-to-back birdies at the second and third holes and produced two eagles that left him practically untouchable.
“It didn’t always go to plan, but I stayed in the moment and I never got ahead of myself,” said the delighted champion.
“I three-putted for bogeys at six, 10 and 13 and that opened the door for Christiaan to mount a challenge, but I managed to pull it back with a birdie at eight and eagle at 14 and finished it off.”
McIntyre said his biggest victory was on the mental front.
“The final round was really a mental challenge and I have to credit my dad Graham and my coach Hendrik Buhrmann for giving me so much constructive advice,” he said.
“They always tell me that this game is 80 percent mental and their tips helped me stay focussed and play shot for shot and to stay in the moment.”
McIntyre was well outside the top 300 in the South African Golf Association Open Amateur rankings when he joined the BDGA Academy in January and has risen to 100th in the last six months. Now he hopes to step up his campaign to break into the top 50.
“My first goal was to get inside the top 100 and then to put together consistent top 10 and top 20 finishes,” he said. “Winning an IGT Tour event was definitely on my to-do list this year, but I never thought it would happen this early in the season.
“I’ve learned so much this week and hopefully I can put it all into play in the Limpopo Open in July. I’ll play a few more IGT Tour events and hopefully I can crack a top 10 finish at Koro Creek.”
BDGA Academy partners Martin du Toit and Buhrmann were thrilled with McIntyre’s breakthrough.
“We are really pleased for David, because he put in a lot of hard work over the last six months,” Du Toit said. “This victory will inspire him and the other members of the academy.
“We joined the other academies on the IGT Tour to showcase Eagle Canyon to the professionals and amateurs, to expose our players to 54-hole competitions against a mixture of pros and ammies and to promote our academy.
“The tournaments are a great opportunity for the members here at Eagle Canyon to watch top class tournament golf and we get interesting feedback, too.
“It’s very interesting to see how the course performs under tournament conditions, with tough pin positions. They played at least six holes per round off the back tees and we feed that statistical information back to the club.”
