JOHANNESBURG, 14 April 2015 – Michael Palmer virtually guaranteed his second title on the IGT Tour in under two months when he romped to an overwhelming lead in the second round of the RAW Golf School Classic on Tuesday.

The 25-year-old Bryanston golfer charged to 14-under-par 130 with a sizzling eight under 64 at Houghton Golf Club, leaving Christiaan Bezuidenhout trailing a distant nine strokes behind.

The recent Centurion Academy Classic champion carded a 69 to finish one stroke ahead of TJ Bekker, who vaulted to third on 140 with a five under 67.

Palmer has been busy since his return to South Africa after a six year stint in the United States.

The Oklahoma City University graduate has his sights set on playing his way on to the European Tour and is honing his game on the country’s premier development Tour ahead of his Big Easy Tour debut in May.

In February, Palmer broke through for his maiden win in the Jeandre Fourie Classic and now he is 18 holes away from his second wire-to-wire victory on the IGT Tour.

While the competitors joked and told Palmer he only needs to show up to collect his trophy, the leader chose to take a more cautious approach.

“I don’t think I should count my chickens, just yet,” he said.

“I played really well, but someone else could show up and shoot the lights out in the final round. I’ll just try to construct another solid round and hopefully seal the win.”

Palmer took a two shot lead into the second round and pulled away from the field with a quartet of birdies on the front nine.

He birdied the 11th and kept his foot on the gas to erase the damage of a lone bogey at the 12th with a brace of birdies at 14 and 15 and another pair at the two closing holes.

“I really enjoyed the set-up today,” Palmer said.

“It was similar to the first round, with fair to difficult holes, but there was a lot of risk and reward opportunities out there. A lot of the pins were in tricky places, though, and if you didn’t pull of the shots, you paid the price.

“I hit a lot of greens in regulation like I did in the first round, but today the putts also dropped. It was really nice to get the putter hot again.”

Palmer wasn’t the only player who enjoyed a bit of fortune on Tuesday.

Gareth Akers holed out for an ace at the par-three seventh with a nine-iron on his way to a 73 that left him well inside the cut, set at 12-over-par 157.
