JOHANNESBURG, 25 August 2015 – Bryandrew Roelofsz strengthened his bid to become the third player this season to score a hat-trick of IGT Tour victories after taking pole position in the second round of the Gary Player School for Champions Academy Classic on Tuesday.

The 23-year-old Edenvale professional overtook overnight leader Herman Minnie, courtesy of a blistering five-under-par 67 at Kyalami Country Club.

Roelofsz, who leads at six under 138, holds a two shot advantage over Simon Kruger and finished three strokes clear of Minnie.

Simon notched four birdies against a pair of bogeys for a 70, while fellow GFG Academy member Minnie rallied with two birdies to counter four bogeys and a double at the par-three third for a 76.

Sunshine Ladies Tour champion Nicole Garcia from the Wanna Be A Champion Academy slipped into fourth on two under after carding a 74.

Roelofsz started the day six shots off the pace.

He overturned an early bogey with birdie at nine, followed with another at 10 and took pole position after further gains at 12, 13, 14 and 18.

“Unfortunately I caught the lip of the bunker at the second and made bogey, but otherwise it was a really solid round,” he said.

“My goal was to birdie all the par fives, but I had to take an unplayable at the fourth, because I was up against a tree. I missed an eagle chance at nine and birdie chances at 15 and 16, but mentally I stayed with it throughout the round.

“That’s a big win at this course. It’s very tight and you’ve got to be very accurate around here. I was fortunate enough to make some good up and downs, which kept the round going.”

Roelofsz returned to competitive golf in April after taking a six month break and made the most of his comeback with his first win in the BDGA Academy Classic.

Having broken a 16-month title drought at Eagle Canyon, he shut out any doubt about his return to form when he closed out a wire-to-wire victory for his fourth IGT Tour title in the Autumn Swing Classic less than a month later.

He boasts nine top 10 finishes in 14 starts this season, including a pair of runner-up finishes, but now Roelofsz wants to join Michael Palmer and Christiaan Bezuidenhout on the exclusive list of three-time IGT Tour winners this season.

“It’s good to be in the final group again,” he said. “I think it is important to get myself into contention in every event, because that’s the kind of consistency that will pay off on the Sunshine Tour.

“You need to get used to perform under that kind of pressure and to push yourself.”
