JOHANNESBURG, 1 April 2014 – Unheralded amateur Keegan Steyn finds himself in unfamiliar territory after he carded a four-under-par 68 to share the first round lead in the IGT Series Centurion.

The Dainfern golfer will have professionals Michael Dreyer and Herman Minnie for company when the trio leads the field in the second round at Centurion Country Club on Wednesday.

“I’m looking forward to a tussle with the pros, because that’s what I need to improve my game,” the 19-year-old said. “I enjoy playing against the pros, because it really forces you to focus on your game.”

Steyn bogeyed his opening hole, but reeled in four birdies to complete the back nine at Centurion in three under.

“I didn’t play badly on the front nine, but I made a couple of bogeys though silly mistakes,” Steyn said.

After a birdie at the first, Steyn bogeyed the second.

“I hit my tee shot too far right on the second and I scrambled for the bogey. I made a birdie at the third, but then I dropped two shots in a row. I had a three-putt bogey at the fourth, and at the fifth, I hit my tee shot left and paid the price again.”

Birdies at the seventh and ninth pushed Steyn back to the front.

The Dainfern amateur is ranked outside the top 100 in South African and has been putting in a lot of time with his coach, John Dixon, at The Els Club Copperleaf, to improve the standard of his game.

He was pleased that the work is starting to play off some dividends.

“John and I have worked on a few things, but I need to put it all together and get more consistent,” he said. “I managed to do that at the Eastern Province Championship and got a top 20 finish. I just need to keep at it and play a lot of tournaments, so I can get used to the pressure and get more consistent.”

Steyn was impressed with the condition of the Pretoria course that suffered a lot of damage and was flooded during the torrential rain that plagued the area in recent weeks.

“We have placing and the damaged areas on the fairways have been marked GUR, but I was very impressed with the greens,” he said. “They are in very good condition and running at a good nice pace.

“It is really amazing what the green staff have been able to do here to prepare the course for us.”

The leading trio are one shot clear of Tyron Mc Comb, Northern Ireland’s John McClean and Thomas Lovett, while a group of seven players lurk at two under par, including Jerry Steyn, Coert Groenewald, Antonio Rosado from Portugal, Ted Hendriks, Danie Pretorius, JC van Dommelen and Mauritian amateur Ludovic Bax.
