JOHANNESBURG, 21 October 2014 – Kempton Park’s Okkie Strydom carded a seven-under-par 65 in the second round of the third Race to Q-School to line up his third IGT Tour victory this season on Tuesday.

Strydom began the day one shot off the pace and finished on 11-under-par 133 after a flawless performance at Ruimsig Country Club.

The Sunshine Tour regular is two strokes clear of Western Province amateur, Jason Diab, who was equally impressive with a 66.

Jaco Prinsloo and two-time IGT Tour winner Russel Franz also registered 66s to tie for third on 136, one stroke clear of Gideon Pienaar, who returned a 68.

Amateur Simon Kruger matched Strydom’s low round of the day to vault to a share of sixth with top ranked amateur, Zander Lombard, who carded a 70.

Strydom racked up two birdies on the front nine and five coming home to pull clear of the field.

“I got the start I wanted and I played steadily after that,” said the 29-year-old.

“I am striking the ball well, but I also putted well and that’s what you have got to do round here.

“The key tomorrow will be keep to my game plan and avoid making mistakes. It’s the sort of course that gives you birdie opportunities but also punishes you if you hit a shot into the wrong place.”

The GFG Academy player won the rain-shortened IGT Series Wingate in March and a week later, denied Toto Thimba in a play-off to claim his second successive title on the country’s premier development Tour in the IGT Series ERPM.

Strydom doesn’t have exemption on the Sunshine Tour and has to pre-qualify, but he put his spot in the field at the Wild Waves Challenge in August to good use to tie for fourth and earn nearly R30,000.

“That money went a long way in covering my expenses,” Strydom said.

“I have to pre-qualify for all the events, but without a sponsor, it’s just about impossible to finance myself outside Gauteng. You’re essentially playing two tournaments when you are a pre-qualifier and it just adds up. It’s financially and emotionally draining, especially when you miss by a shot or two.

“I always compete on the IGT Tour between events. It keeps me competitive and keeps my game in shape for the next local event. Hopefully I can pull it through on Wednesday. The prize money will help to cover my expenses and I can take that confidence to the next pre-qualifier.”
