TSHWANE, 3 December 2014 – Ockie Strydom and CJ du Plessis struck a winning note for GFG Academy with a first and second place finish in a thrilling climax to the IGT Tour’s eighth Race to Q-School at Centurion Country Club on Wednesday.

Strydom carried a four stroke lead into the final round, but had an intense battle on his hands after a double bogey start to hold off Du Plessis to claim his fourth victory on the country’s premier development Tour this season.

The lead changed hands twice on the home stretch, but the Kempton Park golfer boxed a 20-footer at the final hole for a three-under-par 69 and a one stroke victory over his fellow Sunshine Tour campaigner.

Strydom also bettered the 54-hole record by one stroke with a winning tally of 18-under-par 198.

“That was undoubtedly the toughest victory of my season and my career,” said the elated Strydom.

“I got off to a rocky start when I hit my tee shot out of bounds at the 10th and walked off with a double bogey. I made three birdies on the way to the turn, but CJ was just pouring them in and he was closing the gap on me fast.

“I bogeyed the first and he made birdie and suddenly I was on the back-foot.”

Strydom reeled in three successive birdies from the third to catch up to Du Plessis, and the Limpopo golfer let the overnight leader back in the door when he overshot the green at the par-four fourth and dropped two shots.

Du Plessis knocked in a birdie putt at the seventh, and the players reached the ninth tee with Strydom holding a two stroke lead.

“CJ was on the green for one and I knew I had to get to get it on the green, too,” Strydom said.

“But I hit it in the water. The pressure was really on. I had 274 meters to the pin and hit a rescue straight over the flag, about 20 feet behind the pin.

“I still don’t know how exactly I got that right-to-left slider in the hole for par, but somehow I timed it perfectly. It was a huge relief to make that putt to win. All credit to CJ, though; he fought like a demon over the last two days and really made me win for this one!”

Du Plessis, who closed with a 66 and Strydom were both impressed with Pretoria amateur Philip Kruse, who carded a 68.

“He is a gritty little campaigner,” Strydom said. “He has a great fighting spirit and with a little more experience, he is going to have a really good future in the pro ranks.”
