Swart seals maiden win in Pro Squad Classic

TSHWANE, 24 June 2015 – Juan Swart came through a battle of attrition to claim a maiden IGT Tour title in the Pro Squad Classic at Centurion Country Club on Wednesday.

In just his third start on the country’s premier development Tour, the cold and gusty conditions and a tough course set-up truly tested his resolve, but the 24-year-old Port Elizabeth native kept grinding to emerge victorious at his home course.

“The whole day was one long test of patience and endurance, but I survived,” said a smiling Swart, who closed with a one under 71 for a one stroke victory on 10-under-par 206.

Fellow Centurion member Derek Ferreira fired a 68 to finish second, three strokes clear of Woodhill amateur Phillip Kruse, who closed with a 73.

Jacques Kruyswijk, another Centurion local, took fourth on 211 after returning a 74.

Swart carried a two stroke lead over Kruse and IGT Tour winner Kruyswijk into the final round and started the final 18 holes four strokes ahead of Ferreira.

“I was giving myself some good chances and I got to two under through the first five holes with birdies at 12 and 14,” said Swart.

“After going out of bounds at the 15th in the first and second rounds, I just closed my eyes over the tee shot, but once I walked off with a par, I started thinking that this might be my day.”

After a three-putt bogey at 18, he birdied one, but a bogey at the second set him back again. He lost the lead to Ferreira with back-to-back bogeys at five and six, but clawed his way back to the front with a pair of birdies at seven and eight.

“I knew coming down the last three holes that I would have maybe two chances, because it would be really tough to make birdie at the ninth with the wind coming off the right,” Swart said.

“I hit a great drive at seven and three-wood just short of the green. I chipped to about six feet and holed a downhill left to right slider for birdie. That was a game changer and I felt pretty confident walking to the eighth tee.

“The wind was quite strong off the right, so I took eight-iron and it landed pin-high left, six feet from the hole. I made the birdie putt and I knew I just needed a solid par to win after Derek birdied the ninth to finish nine under.”

He produced the textbook par for victory under huge applause from the Centurion members, who braved the cold to support their own.

Swart took up a position in the pro-shop at Centurion after completing his BSc Sport Science degree at TuksSport Golf Academy and his PGA of SA teaching professional diploma.

“I am focussing on my preparation for the Sunshine Tour this year,” he said.

“I have some starts on the Sunshine Tour through the PGA of South Africa, but my long term goal is to earn my full card at Qualifying School next year. It’s a great feeling to pull off my first win here at Centurion. Hopefully I can replicate this feat a few more times this year.”
