TSHWANE, 19 May 2015 – A superb six-under-par 66 Wingate Park Country Club pushed Gideon Pienaar within striking distance of second round leader Michael Palmer in the IGT Tour’s CA Academy Classic at on Tuesday.

On a day when favourable conditions were not complemented by low scoring at the higher end of the leaderboard, Pienaar’s nearly flawless round was the most significant.

After a less than average 71 in the first round, the Silver Lakes player vaulted nine places to finish at seven under, one stroke shy of Palmer at the summit.

Palmer looked to be storming clear of the field after a pair of birdies and an eagle at the par-five 13th, but the overnight leader came sliding back down with bogeys at 14 and 17.

A timely birdie at15 helped the 25-year-old Bryanston professional to a 70, though, that kept his bid for a third victory on the country’s premier development Tour this season alive.

Pienaar’s outstanding performance saw him edge one stroke clear of Paul de Beer and two strokes ahead of Jason Diab, after both players registered 69s.

He notched five birdies on the front nine and two more at 10 and 14 before a soft three-putt bogey at the 17th spoiled his perfect card.

“I played really steady and the putter got really hot on the front nine,” said the 25-year-old KwaZulu-Natal native.

“I drained a 35-footer at the seventh, a 20-footer at the ninth and another 35-footer at the 10th that gave me some nice momentum. Michael has been playing really well and I reckoned he would hang on to the lead, but I knew I was in a good position, no matter what.”

The former IGT Tour winner graduated to the Sunshine Tour, but lost his card at the end of the 2014 season.

“I am playing the IGT Tour this week to gain some form ahead of the Big Easy Tour event at Huddle Park next week,” Pienaar said.

“Hopefully I can gain my card back through the Big Easy Tour, but I need to challenge next week to get myself on the Order of Merit. I didn’t make a great start to the season at Kempton Park earlier this month, so a solid round like today’s was exactly what the doctor ordered.”
