JOHANNESBURG, 1 September 2015 – Edenvale’s Dylan Docherty knows he will have to hold his nerve for a maiden victory with fellow amateur Louis Taylor and pro Danie Pretorius breathing down his neck in IGT Tour’s BDGA Academy Classic at Eagle Canyon Country Club.

Docherty overcame a stumbling start in Tuesday’s second round to card a one under 71 and holds a slender one stroke lead at four-under-par 140 over the Free State pair.

The former Sunshine Tour professional wiped out a two-stroke overnight advantage with a bogey at 11 and a double-bogey at 12. He shaved two shots off his deficit with a pair of birdies before the turn and further gains at the second and fifth holes saw him finish in front again.

Pretorius also dropped three shots around the turn, but erased the damage with four birdies down the back for a 69 and Taylor negated bogeys at three, six and 11 with seven birdies for a 68.

Docherty took pride in his battling performance.

“It was a rough start, but I’m pleased that I turned things around,” the Modderfontein golfer said.

“It’s still early days with the new swing, but I played solid. After all the hard graft to get myself into this position, a win will do my self-belief the world of good.”

The Wanne Be A Champion player knows that he can’t afford to slip up over the last 18 holes.

“It’s going to take another very solid round to keep the chasing pack at bay,” he said.

“I haven’t been in this position in years, so I will definitely feel the pressure. It will be important to stay calm and focussed and not to let old habits creep into my swing under pressure.”

Taylor, one of South Africa’s leading amateurs in 2014, hopes to join twin-brother Eddie on the Sunshine Tour next year.

“It was a huge disappointment to miss out at Q-School, but I’ve moved on,” the Gary Player School For Champions player said.

“I’ve been working very hard on my game and making a lot of time for golf in the last seven months and it feels like all the aspects of my game are all in sync again and working together nicely.

“A breakthrough on the IGT Tour will go a long way in getting some self-belief back, but I’m not going to start the final round with a win in mind, though.

“I just want to approach the last 18 holes the same way I played the first two rounds. Post the best score I can and if it’s good enough, great; if not, there is always next time.”

Meanwhile Ivanna Samu, the country’s leading junior and senior amateur golfer, followed an opening 73 with an even-par 72 to tie for 10th with Vincent Minnie on one over 145.

The reigning Sanlam SA Women’s Amateur Stroke Play champion finished seven strokes ahead of fellow GFG Academy player Carrie Park, who signed for a second round 77.
