BENONI, 4 November 2014 – Overnight leader Tristen Strydom continued to upstage the professionals and establish a four stroke lead going into the final round of the fifth IGT Tour Race to Q-School at Benoni Country Club on Tuesday.

Despite battling a frozen putter for a second day running, the 17-year-old Pretoria amateur reeled in five birdies for a three-under-par 69 to move to seven under 137.

Although he has a fairly large cushion, Strydom is taking nothing for granted.

“There are a couple of amateurs and pros on my tail,” the youngster said.

“I know I have a four shot lead, but any one of them could go low on Wednesday. I’ll try not to think about it, because that just adds to the pressure. I’ll just focus on playing my own game.”

Shaun van Tonder returned a 70 to grab a share of second with amateurs Hennie du Plessis from Limpopo and Gauteng North’s Ross Sinclair, who both signed for 69s.

Gauteng amateur Matthew Spacy carded a 69 to finish on two under, one shot ahead of Armand Scholtz, who aced the par-three 15th on his way to a 71 and a seat on the bus at one under.

The Boland amateur shares sixth place with Italian amateur Philip Geerts (72) and professionals Mpho Mafishe (71) and Jonathan Waschefort, whose 67 was the low round of the day.

Strydom demonstrated his confidence under pressure with victories in the Nomads SA Boys U-19 Stroke Play Championship and two provincial match play championships on the local amateur circuit this season.

The amateur appears quite at home among the paid ranks, but putting woes over the last two days has given him cause to worry.

“If I wasn’t hitting my driver so well, I doubt I would be leading,” Strydom said. “I’m striking the ball really well and leaving myself short irons in. But I get the ball within six to 10 feet from the pins and then can’t sink a putt to save my life.

“I had 33 putts again and I three-putted two of the par fives. That’s where you need to score. On the stretch from 10 to 14, I missed five six-footers on the trot. It’s just been two very, very frustrating days out there.”

Strydom notched his first birdie at the fifth after an hour and 45 minute suspension due to lightning. He knocked in another birdie putt at the sixth, dropped a shot at the eighth, but eliminated the mistake with a four at the par-five ninth to turn in two under.

He bogeyed the 14th down the home stretch, but countered with birdies at the 16th and 18th holes.

“Sometimes they drop, but most of the time it’s two putts for par,” he said. “It’s tough to fix something that’s broken in a tournament, but I’ll keep on fighting. If I can continue to give myself chances, I could pull this through.”

European Ladies Tour rookie Nobuhle Dlamini fired a 71 to tie for 19th on two-over-par 146 alongside local pro Johary Raveloarison (74) and amateurs Joubert van Eeden (72) and Dylan Docherty (71).
