MIDRAND, 11 June 2014 – Korea’s Huyn Park held his nerve under intense pressure from Sunshine Tour regular Okkie Strydom to seal a wire-to-wire victory at the IGT Tour’s fifth Race to USA on Wednesday.

The 22-year-old Seoul golfer mixed three birdies with a lone bogey at the Dainfern Estate and Country Club to claim his second Race to the USA title with a final round 70.

Strydom shared the first round lead with Park, but slipped from contention after a costly second round 74. The 29-year-old Kempton Park golfer retaliated with a six-under-par 66 in the final round to finish a shot shy of Park’s winning total of eight-under-par 208.

Cape Town’s Lean Boezaart clocked in with a 71 to finish in third on four under 212, while Rob Menzies from England sewed up fourth on 213 with a closing 68.

Race to the USA Irene winner, Michael Scholz, claimed fifth on 214 with a final round 70.

Park’s second podium finish may not have been as spectacular as the runaway six-stroke victory at the Race to the USA ERPM last month, but considering the pressure he faced from the experienced Strydom, the end result was undeniably impressive.

“Okkie was two under at the turn, but after he eagled the 12th, the gap closed considerably and I really started to feel the pressure,” Park said.

“I was very solid golf tee to green throughout the round, but I just wasn’t making a lot of birdies. I just told myself to stick to my own game and not to think about what he was doing.

“I am really proud that I held up under the pressure to win.”

After Park missed the cut at the Sunshine Tour Qualifying School early this season, he decided to stay in South Africa and campaign on the country’s premier development Tour.

“I set several goals with my coach, Graeme Francis, and I’m really happy with my progress,” the GFG Academy player said.

“I have to get top 10 finishes in at least half of the 32 IGT Tour events and three wins. So far, I’ve had eight top 10 finishes in 14 starts, so I am ahead of the game.

“Consistency is key and I am happy with my results so far. Now I would really like to win a few more.”
