JOHANNESBURG, 8 January 2014 – Although CJ du Plessis and Tyrone Ryan still head the leaderboard at ERPM Golf Club, a strong third round performance has inspired Sunshine Tour hopeful Otto van Greunen ahead of the final round of the IGT Tour’s first Q-School Warm Up tournament.

Limpopo’s Du Plessis opened up a one shot gap with a six-under-par 66 on joint overnight leader Ryan, who returned a solid 67, while Ted Hendriks added a 67 to his pair of 68s to finish in third on his own, three shots shy of Du Plessis’ target at 16-under-par 200.

Van Greunen, meanwhile, claimed the low round of the day with a flawless 65 and his effort vaulted the young gun to joint fourth on 12 under 204 alongside Coert Groenewald, who navigated the 7,303m layout in 69.

Amateur Callum Mowat, who won the Race to Q-School, stayed in touch with a 69 to finish five off the pace alongside Rhys West, who carded a 68.

Van Greunen already proved his mettle with a sixth place finish in the 12-event Race to Q-School series, which earned him a paid trip to Bloemfontein.

However, with only one more Q-School Warm-Up event remaining and the Sunshine Tour Qualifying School looming at the end of January, the young professional is pushing the envelope in preparation of the gruelling test ahead.

“Winning would obviously be first prize, but at this stage in the game, I am chasing consistency, so even a top five finish would be a great result,” Van Greunen said. “At this stage in the game, we just want to have a solid game to take to Q-School; something that will stand up under the pressure.

“I’m happy with the way things have been progressing over the Race to Q-School series and if I can keep up this kind of form, I’ll take a lot of confidence to Q-School.”

Hendriks, who was forced into a seven year break from the pro circuit due to injury, was also thrilled with his performance just three months into his comeback.

“It’s great to be competing again, and to be shooting some low numbers,” the 33-year-old said. “I won’t be going to Q-School this year, but I’ll play the IGT Tour to get myself fighting fit for next season. This is a great start to the season, though.”
